Raymond was born in Vancouver on 26 March 1918 the son of William Newton and Mona Agnes Newton (Barlow). His father a chief steward for CPR was born in England and his mother in Victoria, British Columbia. He had a brother Gerald. The schools he attended were Laura Secord 1925-1933, Britannia High 1933-1937, the University of British Columbia 1938-1939 and Western College 1939-1940. Raymond enjoyed playing football, baseball and tennis and his hobbies were pharmacy and photography. Raymond worked for C.P. Steamships as a porter during the Summer holidays of 1935-1936 and then as an apprentice at Cunningham Drug Store during 1937-1940. He enlisted on 2 May 1941. |
After training Raymond was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Canada on 30 August 1944, arriving at 3PRC on 5 September 1944. He then went to 61 Base 2 October 1944, 1666 CU, and finally 428 Squadron on 19 December 1944. It was from there that Raymond sadly lost his life on 15 March 1945. |
