Miscellaneous Information
Tony was born on 6 July 1921 at Gilbert Plains, Manitoba. Both parents were born in Galicia (religion Greek Orthodox) and he had a brother Nick who was serving overseas and two sisters, Mary and Helen. After his father died in 1936 his mother re-married a Mr. Makichuk and he acquired 3 stepbrothers . One of them Corporal Makichuk was killed on the same day as Tony and the other two were serving overseas in Italy. There seems to be no mention of any schools but he did gain Senior Matric. His sport interests were baseball, soccer and hockey and he enjoyed mechanics as a hobby. His enlistment papers show that he had been a carpenter’s helper. |
He enlisted on 29 October 1941 and after training arrived in the U.K. on 13 February 1943. He went on to 10 (0) AFU 22 June 1943, 20 OTU 3 August 1943, 1663 CU. 27 October 1943 and 51 Squadron 2 May 1944. Tony was sadly to lose his life from here on 30 June 1944. |
His last operation was his 49th. A commemorative headstone was placed in Dauphin Riverside Cemetery, Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada. It also bears the name of Mary, his sister, who died 1945. Her death does not appear to be related to the war. Negrich Lake is named in his honour (Division No. 23, Unorganized, Manitoba, Canada, almost on the northern provincial border with Nunavut). |
