Donald was born in London, Ontario on 21 June 1917. His father worked as a machinist and was born in London, Ontario. His mother too, was born in London. He had two sisters, Beverley and Annabelle. He attended Tecumseh school 1922 - 1931 (General Course) followed by London South Collegiate Institute 1931-1937 (University Course, General Matric). The sports he was interested in were swimming and skating, golf, tennis and baseball. Between 1931-1937 Donald worked as a paper boy but had to give it up as he was getting too old. He then worked at the Cosy Restaurant as a cashier on Saturday nights, 1936-1937, and was a Board Boy and clerk between 1937-1940. |
Having enlisted on 8 October 1940, Donald embarked for the U.K. after early training on l5 August 1941. He arrived at 3 PRC on 15 September 1941, 19 OTU 23 December 1941 and 78 Squadron on 21 May 1942. |
