Operation | Kiel |
Reason for Loss | Attacked Kiel at 01:16 with all bombs dropped from 18000' in a single stick. No results were seen owing to cloud cover. Intense and accurate heavy-calibre anti-aircraft fire and searchlights were 'numerous and well handled' according to the ORB entry. On the return leg the aircraft was twice struck by lightning, the trailing aeriel burned off and a wing tip damaged, not to mention severe difficulties with icing to the extent that the controls froze up. As a result, the aircraft went into a spin at 8000' down to 4000', whereupon the pilot regained control and returned the aircraft to straight and level flight. In the ensuing confusion the rear gunner bailed out and fell to his death. The aircraft otherwise made a return to base and landed at 05:12. |
