Reason for Loss | According to 'Bombers, First and Last' by Gordon Thorburn, page 24, Sgt Murgatroyd was killed when Wellington L7786 WS-X was hit by flak on return from Hamburg, whilst over the Dutch coast. He was in the bomb aimer's position trying to get a pinpoint for the Navigator, and a flak shell burst hit him in the chest. The aircraft otherwise made a safe return to England. |
