Miscellaneous Information
Lorne was born on 15 August 1912 at Mountain Township, Dundas, Ontario. His father was born at Inkerman, Ontario and his mother was born at Brinston, Ontario. He had two brothers- John Douglas and Cecil Guy- and a married sister Glenna Mabel Sills. He attended Brantford Public School 1921-1925 followed by Brantford Collegiate Institute 1925-1929 (Teachers' Matric). His sport interests were Lacrosse and basketball. Between 1929-1933 George worked as a clerk for Bell Telephones and then filled in with odd jobs until 1940. He was then working as a labourer for William Paterson between 1940-1941, and as a Stock Keeper 1941-1942 for Massey Harris. For the last three months he was a Salesman for R.T. Brown until enlisting on 28 July 1942. |
After initial training, Lorne was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Halifax on 13 September 1943, arriving at 3PRC on 24 September 1943. He continued to 9(0)AFU on 9 November 1943, 83 OTU 25 January 1944, 11 Base 30 April 1944, 300 Squadron 1 July 1944, 109 Squadron 7 September 1944 and 156 Squadron 13-September 1944. Lorne sadly lost his life on 31 March 1945. |

Operation | Hamburg to attack the Blohm and Voss shipbuilding yards, where a new class of U-boats was being assembled. 469 aircraft, 11 lost due to a surprise appearance of the new Me 262 jet-propelled fighter. It was it's only appearance in fact. The target was completely cloud-covered so bombing was scattered throughout Hamburg with little damage to the intended target |
Reason for Loss | Thought to have crashed near Stemmen, north of Rotenburg, Germany. Some other sources give the crash location as Wümme, 17 km West of Rotenburg. |
