Miscellaneous Information
Daily Herald 14th February 1940: " BEF Mother Just in Time. Saw her son before he died. Somewhere in France, Tuesday. I have just spoken to the first two mothers who have come over to visit sick sons in the BEF. They are Mrs. Misselbrook of Hamworthy, near Poole, Dorset and Mrs. Beasley of Cirencester, Gloucestershire. Mrs. Misselbrook had one son, George. He was 25, a corporal in the R.A.F. He died of pneumonia a few hours after she saw him. Mrs. Beasley has seven. Walter, the 20-year-old son she came to see, a private in the Gloucester Regiment, is now happily on the way to recovery from meningitis. "So you see,' said Mrs. Misselbrook. as we talked in a room of the British Red Cross Base Hospital, Mrs. Beasley could give me one of hers, couldn't she? " And that very brave attempt at a pleasantry was all the self-pity which Mrs. Misselbrook allowed herself. Both mothers were grateful for the efficiency of the scheme which had brought them so quickly to France." |
