Miscellaneous Information
Thomas was born on 12 November 1914 at Oakville, Ontario. He had a brother Charles and a sister Dorothy. His father, born Stratford, Ontario, worked as an electrician for Canadian National Railway and his mother was born in Burlington, Ontario. He was educated at Hamlet Public School between 1920-1927 and then at Stratford Collegiate Vocational Institute 1927-1931 (Matric). Thomas had a variety of jobs: 1932-1937 working as a miner for Omega Mines. 1937-1939 also a miner, for International Nickel Co. 1939-1940 worked on production line for McKinnon Ind. Ltd. 1940 1941 Tyre builder for Firestone Tires Ltd. May-July 1941, electrical maintenance for Canada Steel Co. and then as a Brakeman for C.N.R. He played hockey and softball. |
He enlisted 29 July 1941 and after training embarked for the U.K. on 23 June 1943. After arrival he went to 3PRC, 14 (P) AFU, 20 July 1943, 24 OTU, 25 January 1944, and eventually to 424 Squadron on 11 March 1944. He lost his life exactly two months later and just six weeks after his marriage. |
On 31 March 1944, he married Edna Lenore Millman in East Grinstead, Sussex, Millman being both her maiden and married surname. In 1945, after Thomas's death, she worked in the RCAF wing at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead but may have emigrated to Canada after this, possibly to Meldrum Bay, Manitoulin Island, Ontario. |
