Miscellaneous Information
William was born at London, Ontario in 3 April 1915. His father, a physician and surgeon, was born at London, Ontario, as was his mother. He had one sister: Mary Catherine. He attended Elbow Park Public school 1922-1930, (high school entrance), and then to Brentwood College 1930- 1931. He then attended Mount Royal College between 1931 and 1933 (University Entrance) and Western Canada High 1933-1936, also University Entrance. His sporting interests were hockey and swimming amongst others, and as a hobby he would drive cars, trucks and tractors. He held a Private Pilot’s certificate. Between 1936-1940 William worked as a Salesman at T. Eaton Co., Western, Calgary, Alberta, (radio and refrigeration). |
William enlisted on 19 December 1940 and after training embarked from Canada on 24 May 1944, arriving at 3PRC on 2 June. He was then at 1664 CU 1 July 1944, 61 Base and then 419 Squadron on 6 August 1944. Sadly William was to lose his life on 23 October 1944. |

Operation | Essen. 1055 aircraft- a record and yet remarkably 5 Group was not called upon at all. This was the heaviest raid on Essen so far. 8 losses (0.76%). 4538 tons of bombs were dropped, most of which were high explosives since it was considered that there was little left to burn in the target area. 607 buildings were destroyed and 812 seriously damaged. 662 people were killed. |
