Miscellaneous Information
George was born on 25 October 1920 at Corbin, British Columbia. His father was born at Fergus, Ontario and was a steam engineer and his mother was born in North Staffordshire, England. He had one brother Kenneth who was overseas and a sister Myrtle. The schools he went to were Chemainus Public between 1926- 1934 (general course) and Ladysmith High, 1934-1938 (general and typing). His sport interests were hockey and baseball and he was also a referee for basketball . He also enjoyed photography, hunting and guns. George worked as a machinist, millwright and sawmill engineer for J.A. Humbird at Victoria Lumber & Manufacturing Company in Chemainus. 1938-1939. It was one of the towns largest employers. |
He enlisted on 22 October 1940 and after training was posted to the U.K. He arrived at 3 PRC on 8 January 1942 and then continued to 5 S.S. 18 March 1942, 23 OTU on 5 May 1942, 1651 CU 23 July 1942, 419 Sqn 5 December 1942, 35 Sqn on 4 March 1943 and on to 405 Squadron on 17 May 1943. It was from there that George sadly lost his life on 14 July, 1943. |

Operation | Aachen. 374 aircraft, 20 losses (5.3%). A strong tail wind led to the main force arriving early and when PFF marked the target, so many aircraft were waiting that the town appeared to erupt into flames. Almost 3000 buildings were destroyed including apartment blocks, so the number of dwellings destroyed was some 16828. The cathedral, the town hall and many other civic amenities were also classed as severely damaged. |
Reason for Loss | Shot down by a night-fighter and crashed SE of Helmond, Holland. It is thought that the aircraft disintegrated in the air. |
