Miscellaneous Information
Lachlan was born on 26 August 1909 at Collingwood, Ontario the son of Lachlan McEachern and Margaret Ann McEachern (Wilson). His father, a ship builder, was born in Kirkfield and his mother in Toronto. He was from a large family of twelve childre: four brothers (Donald, Herbert, John and William) and seven sisters. He attended Victoria Public School 1916-1925 and Collingwood Technical school 1926-1929. His hobby was small lathe work and sport interests, skiing and skating. Lachlan was employed as a Truck driver for Gilpin brothers 1929-1931 and was again a truck driver 1932-1936 for Stewart Transport. He then bought out his employer and was manager at McEachern Transport 1936-1939. He then worked in ship building from 1939-1941, following which he enlisted. |
After enlisting at Toronto on 7 May 1941 and initial training, he was posted to the U.K. and departed from Canada on 8 January 1942, arriving at 3 PRC on 21 January. From there he was at 418 Squadron 30 January 1942. After numerous other postings he arrived at 82 OTU on 1 February 1944, followed by 61 Base 22 May 1944 and 434 Squadron on 24 June 1944. Sadly Lachlan was to lose his life on 29 July 1944 from 434 Squadron. |

Operation | Hamburg. 307 aircraft. German night-fighters appeared on the return leg leading to 22 losses (7.2%). This was the first raid on Hamburg for a year and was not well concentrated. The Germans were unable to determine the aiming point from the bombing results. Most of the bombs fell on areas devastated during 1943. |
