Obituary as published in the 9 July 1943 edition of the Glengarry News: Sgt. D. McDonald Edmonton, Killed Son of Late Green Valley Native Had Been Missing Since May 14th Mrs J. H. McKinnon, 9th Lancaster has received word from her sister-in-law, Mrs. George E. McDonald, Edmonton, Alta., that the latter's only son, Sgt., Observer Donald McDonald, 26 of the R.C.A.F. has been killed in action over Germany. The young airman had previously been reported missing in action on the night of May 14th, and further word has now been received. Born in Edmonton, Sgt. Observer McDonald was the only child of the late George E. McDonald who left Green Valley some thirty years ago and whose death occurred some five years ago. Mr. McDonald was the son of Duncan H. McDonald and his wife Annie McDonald of Green Valley. Miscellaneous Note: Excerpt of letter from J.P. Macdonald: "Flight Sergeant observer Donald Francis McDonald (was) killed in action over Germany (on the) 14th May, 1943 with the Royal Canadian Air Force, age 26. born Edmonton Alberta. From the book "They Shall Grow not Old", page 486. McDonald, Donald Francis FS (NB) R93881 From Edmonton, Alberta. Killed in Action May 14/43 age 25. #149 East India Squadron (Fortis Nocte) # BK 726 was shot down at Monchen-Gladbach, Germany, P/O Harold Earl Forsyth (Find a Grave Memorial 18406606 )and WO. Yvon Jean Baptiste Guepin (Find a Grave Memorial 18406793) were also Killed. Four members of the crew , not Canadians, missing believed killed. Flight Sergeant Navigator/ Bomb aimer McDonald was buried in the Prisoner of War section of the City Cemetery at Monchen-Gladbach, exhumed, and reburied in the war Cemetery at Rheinburg, Germany. |
