| Reason for Aircraft Loss | Attacked on the outbound leg by an unseen enemy aircraft, from the rear and slightly below. Jettisoned bomb load at 22:37 hrs, position 48.22N 01.26E, close to Chartres, mid-way between Paris and Le Mans. Cannon shells hit the port fuselage, tail plane, flaps and wings and knocked out the IFF (identify: friend or foe) system. Fin and rudder also damaged. The burning oxygen lines set fire to the dinghy. The rear gunner was killed in the attack, after which the aircraft made for home and arrived back at base at 01:49hrs with Sgt Mason's body aboard. |
