Miscellaneous Information
Born on 25 September 1916 and went by the name Gordon. He was the only child of Thomas and Juanita Marsden, both of whom came from relatively affluent Cheltenham families. Gordon probably spent his childhood between London and Cheltenham with visits to Switzerland where his German-born maternal grandmother had gone to live prior to WWI. His father had passed away by 1937 when Gordon went to Cambridge University to read Modern and Mediaeval Languages at Emmanuel College. During the vacations he lived with his spinster aunt in Cheltenham. He graduated in 1940 and went straight into the RAF, having already achieved his pilot's licence at the University Aero Club. Gordon’s mother died on the second anniversary of his death. |
