Miscellaneous Information
Irving was born in Thorburn, Nova Scotia on 24 May 1922, and was the son of Alen G. MacDonald and Lydia MacDonald (née Beaton), of Thorburn, Nova Scotia. His father was born in Thorburn and his mother in Cape Breton, both were deceased by the time of Irving's enlistment. He had a brother John who became his next-of-kin. Irving went to school in Thorburn, 1928-1938 and achieved High School Entrance and also Junior Matric 1938-1940. (Grade 9). He joined in softball and hockey. Between 1938-1940 he carried out various odd jobs and was a coal miner for five months and also a helper on a truck. Irving served in the 2nd Battn. Pictou Highlanders ( R.F.) at Stellarton, Nova Scotia as a Private between September and October 1940. He then enlisted on 13 February 1941. |
He embarked from Canada on 28 October 1942, arriving in the U.K. at 3 PRC on 6 November 1942. He went on to 7 AGS 23 January 1943, 1659 CU 20 February 1943, and 408 Squadron on 25 March 1943. Irving sadly lost his life a few weeks later on 17 April 1943, shortly before his 21st birthday. |

Operation | Pilsen- Skoda armaments factory. 327 aircraft, 36 loses (11.0%). The main force was told to locate the Skoda factory visually and only to use PFF marking as a general guide. A large asylum building some 7 miles away was mistaken for the target. The Skoda factory was not hit at all. |
