Miscellaneous Information
Norman was born on 19 March 1918 at Cobalt, Ontario. His father was born at Toronto and worked as a miner and his mother was born at Ville Marie, Quebec. He had two sisters: Patricia and Doreen who had sadly died in 1921. He also had six brothers: Corporal Harold Ralph (RCAF overseas), Sapper Fred Keith, Sergeant Ronald (RCAF overseas), and Private Vincent. There were two other brothers who had also died: Robert in 1922 and Joseph in 1935. He attended Cobalt Separate School 1924-1931, Kirkland High school 1931-1935 and Kirkland Technical School 1935-1937- both in Ontario. Amongst his sport interests were baseball, hockey and rugby. Between 1937-1939 Norman was in Claim work at Lake Shore, was a clerk for one year at CN Express 1939-1940 and then worked underground in a mine for a year as a Motor Man. |
He enlisted on 8 December 1941 and after training was posted to the U.K. He embarked from Halifax on 27 May 1943 arriving at 3PRC on 5 June. He then proceeded through 5(0)AFU 29 June 1943, 23 OTU 3 August 1943, 61 Base 12 November 1943 and 431 Squadron on 13 March 1944. Sadly Norman lost his life the following month on 23 April 1944. |

Operation | Düsseldorf. 596 aircraft, 29 losses (4.9%). 2150 tones of bombs were dropped, causing considerable damage, mainly to the northern districts. 56 large industrial premises were hit, of which 7 were destroyed. More than 2000 homes were destroyed, 883 people killed and 593 injured, although these figures were compiled before all the missing had been dug out. |
