William was born on 6 October 1925 at Windsor, Ontario. His father who was a Shipping clerk at Fords of Windsor, was born at Ramsgate, Kent in England and his mother was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. He had one sister, Margaret Irene Catherine. He went to the J.E. Benson school in Windsor, 1931-1941 followed by Windsor Vocational school, 1941-1943 studying electricity. William liked to play football and basketball and enjoyed swimming and skating. His hobby was the radio. He worked as a helper at Cherniak & Co., Windsor 1942-1943 and then tool grinding at Ford Motor Company in Windsor for two months in 1943. |
William enlisted on 30 August 1943 and when he had finished his training, embarked for the U.K. He left Halifax on 29 August 1944 and arrived at 3 PRC on 6 September. He was then at 6 (0) AFU. 26 September 1944, 1(0) AFU 5 December 1944, 24 OTU 28 December 1944 and 1659 HCU on 13 April 1945. Sadly, the following month 17 May 1945, William, still only nineteen years old, was to lose his life. |
