Miscellaneous Information
He was the squadron CO and before that commanded 692 (Mosquito) Squadron. He had previously evaded capture after surviving the crash of 74 Squadron Spitfire W3717 in France on 6 July 1941 during operation Circus 35. He was repatriated to UK on 21 October 1941 via Spain and Gibraltar. File WO 208/3307/577 refers - see https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7319315. Remarkably, he evaded capture a second time after surviving the crash of 161 Squadron aircraft V9597 in France on 1 September 1942 during an SOE operation. He was repatriated to UK on 19 September 1942. There appears to be no WO 208 file for this second successful evasion. |

DSO Citation, London Gazette, 9 October 1942: "Squadron Leader Lockhart has participated in many operational sorties and the successes gained can be attributed largely to his careful organisation and planning. He has, at all times, displayed courage, skill and fortitude which have been in keeping with the highest traditions of the Royal Air Force". |

Operation | Friedrichshafen. 323 aircraft, 18 Lancasters Lost (5.6%). A highly dangerous raid deep into German territory in bright moonlight and only four weeks after the disastrous raid on Nuremberg, which was still fresh in everybody's minds. The target was of high importance due to its engine and gearbox plants, mainly used for German tanks. Friedrichshafen was, however, further south and barely within reach of German fighter bases. Several diversionary raids assisted with confusing the German Controllers. This was an outstandingly successful raid with excellent marking leading to an estimated 67% of the town being devastated. The gearbox plant was completely destroyed and, according to a German report, the most damaging blow to tank production of the war. |
