Miscellaneous Information
Samuel was born at Winnipeg , Manitoba on 6 March 1922. Both parents were born in Ireland, his father in County Tyrone and his mother in County Donegal. He had two brothers John, and also Archibald Frederick who was a PoW in Germany. He also had a sister Edith Jane. He attended Lord Roberts School between 1928-1937 ( grades 1-9), followed by Kelvin School 1937-1939 Commercial Course (grade 11)- both in Winnipeg. The sports he enjoyed were hockey, baseball, swimming and golf. Samuel was a Mail Order Clerk for T. Eaton Co, for three years between 1939-1942. |
He enlisted on 24 August 1942 and after initial training, embarked from Halifax for the U.K. on 26 August 1943. After arriving at 3PRC on 2 September he then went to 22 OTU 14 September 1943, 61 Base 4 December 1943 and 419 Squadron on 21 February 1944. Sadly Samuel was to lose his life on 13 May 1944. |

Operation | Leuven/ Louvain- to bomb railway yards. 120 aircraft, 5 losses (4.2%). A more accurate bombing raid than the previous night with considerable damage to the yards. According to the local report, repairs were still being carried out some six months later. Civilian casualties were heavy with 160 deaths and 208 injured. Part of the local University, 8 factories, 4 convents and a church were also damaged |
