| Russel was born on 28 September 1918 at El Paso, Texas. His father, a Rancher, was born at Pecos, Texas and his mother at Van Houton, Texas. His mother died in 1925 and his father in 1934. He had one married sister, Nan Lummie (La Grange). He attended Nogales Primary school 1926-1932 followed by Nogales High 1932-1935. His sporting interests were boxing and football. He was at home, not working between 1935-1936 and then spent four years in the US Navy at Long Beach, California as a gunner, between 1936-1940. After that he became a Professional Boxer working for Walter Ekwert in Los Angeles. |
| Russel enlisted on 3 December 1940 (while the United States was still neutral) and after initial training embarked for the U.K. on 24 January 1942. After arrival at 3 PRC on 18 February 1942 he went to 20 OTU 19 May 1942, then 115 Squadron on 21 August 1942. Sadly Russel was to lose his life one month later on 21 September 1942. |
