End Date | 14-05-1943 |
Takeoff Station | Chedburgh |
Day/Night Raid | Night (65% moon) |
Operation | Bochum. 442 aircraft, 24 losses (5.4%). Decoy markers drew much of the bombing away from the target. Little information available from local sources about the extent of the damage. |
Reason for Loss | Shot down by a night-fighter (Lt Schön, I./NJG1) and crashed at 02:18hrs into a house at Heerlen, the Netherlands. Three of the occupants of the burning house, the 56 year-old mother, an 18-year-old son and a 14-year-old daughter died of their wounds the same day. F/S Leslie Sutcliffe survived the crash with a fractured pelvis. F/O Arthur Reginald Minton, the navigator, also became a navigator. Both became prisoners of war. After the ending of hostilities none of the bodies could be identified and so all are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. |
