Born 16 February 1910 in Chambery, France. Following school in 1930, Antoine joined the French Naval Academy and after graduating served on a number of ships before he trained as a pilot at Orly. Antoine reached the rank of Lieutenant de vassieau (Lieutenant of the ship), equivalent to Flt Lt in the RAF. He gained his pilots license in Oct 1937and served at a number of Naval Air Bases in southern France on seaplanes before qualifying as a Fighter pilot in Apr 1940. He was then posted to a Naval Air Base in Tunisia where he subsequently requested to be put on Armistice Leave in Jan 1941. Antoine then became a civil pilot, in Morocco, with Air France. |
In July 1941 he flew to Gibraltar, where he immediately joined the Free French Naval Forces. Antonie travelled to the UK in Jul 1941 and, following a short period of training with the RAF, was posted to 615 Sqn, RAF Manston, flying Hurricanes. He flew over 40 sorties with the Sqn before he was posted, in Nov 1941, to 138 (Special Duties) Sqn, RAF Stradishall, to fly the Westland Lysander on Special Operations Executive operations. |
