Miscellaneous Information
| Joseph was born on 6 May 1920 at Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, USA. His father was born in Czechoslovakia/Austria as was his mother. Sadly she died in 1929. He had brothers George and John and sisters Margaret, Irene, Betty and Veronica. Tragically, young Veronica died from burns as a result of a fire at home in 1922. The schools he attended were Jednota Home 1932-1934, followed by St. Mary’s High 1935-1939. For sport he enjoyed basketball, tennis, football, swimming and sailboats. His hobbies were stamps and pipes. Joseph worked at Bethlehem Steel Company at Sparrow Point, Maryland as a Feeder at the sheet mill between 1939-1941. |
| He enlisted at Toronto on 14 November 1941 (whilst the United States was still neutral, and in doing so risked his citizenship). After training was posted to the U.K. He arrived at 3PRC on 30 July 1942 then passed through 7 AGS 9 September 1942, 22 OTU 29 September 1942, 424 Sqn 14 January 1943, 432 Sqn 1 May 1943, 405 Squadron 5 June 1943. Joseph sadly lost his life very shortly afterwards, on 25 June 1943. |
