Miscellaneous Information
Peter was born at Fort William, Ontario on 2 April 1925. Both parents were born in Western Ukraine and his father worked as a plumber. They were living in East Kildonan, Manitoba at the time of his enlistment. He went to Polson School at East Kildonan , 1931-1940 (grade IX), followed by East Kildonan Collegiate 1940-1942 (XI) Matric. His sport interests were hockey, football, baseball and rugby. His hobbies were making model aeroplanes, stamp collecting, reading and photography. During the summer holidays of 1940 -1941 he worked as a plumbing and heating engineer for J T McNulty in Winnipeg, and for the Galpern Candy Company as a Candy maker’s helper for a few months in the summer of 1942. He was then an electrician’s helper, July-December 1942 for H. Levant, also in Winnipeg. |
Peter enlisted on 23 March 1943 and after training was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Canada on 1 November 1943. He arrived at 3PRC in the U.K. on 10 November 1943 then continued to 82 OTU on 21 December 1943, 61 Base 22 April 1944 and 427 Squadron on 29 May 1944. Sadly this young man was only nineteen years old when he lost his life from 427 Squadron. |

Operation | Arras- to attack lines of communication. Part of a 671 aircraft force to further hamper lines of communications leading to the Normandy area. Cambrai and Caen attacks were scattered but Amiens, Arras and Poitiers were accurate. 23 aircraft were Lost (3.4%) including that of Charles Mynarski VC, the subject of the Canadian Lancaster 'Vera'. |
