| Herbert was born on 5 July 1921 at Toronto ,Ontario. His father, who was deceased by the time of Herbert's enlistment, was employed in the steel business and was born at Kingston, Ontario and his mother was born in Montreal, Québec. He had two brothers, John Gildersleve and Robert Campbell as well as sisters Patricia and Nora. He attended Roslyn Avenue school, Westmount, Quebec 1926-1933, Trinity College School, Port Hope, Ontario 1933-1939 and McGill University, Montreal, 1939-1940. Herbert enjoyed sports and played football, hockey and track events extensively. His hobby was reading. He worked for the Railway & Power Engine Corporation in Montreal as a clerk. |
| He enlisted on 24 September 1940 and after training was posted to the U.K. After embarking from Canada on 16 August 1941 he arrived at 3 PRC on 15 September 1941 then continued to 11 OTU 30 September 1941, 20 OTU 6 January 1942 and 419 Squadron 25 March 1942. Sadly Herbert went missing on 6 June 1942. |
