Miscellaneous Information
Francis was born on 17 June 1919 at Timmins, Ontario. Both parents were deceased by the time of his enlistment. His father was born in Morrisburg, Ontario and was a businessman and his mother had been born at Arnprior, Ontario. His next of kin is shown on his enlistment papers as his grandmother, Mrs Elizabeth Hanrahan. The schools he attended were St. Thomas Separate School, Sudbury. 1925-1932, North Bay, Collegiate, Ontario. 1932-1935 (Jnr. Matric) and Timmins Business College, Ontario 1935-1936 (typing, bookkeeping etc.) His sport interests were hockey, rugby and skiing. Francis worked for the Imperial Bank in Timmins as a junior ledger keeper 1936- 1937 and was then transferred to the Imperial branch at South Porcupine, as ledger keeper and teller, 1937-1940. He was at the Township of Tisdale, South Porcupine as a cashier 1940-1941. On 23 September 1941 he then enlisted at Ottawa. |
After training he was posted to the U.K. and departed from Canada on 23 June 1943 arriving at 3 PRC on 2 July 1943. From there he went to 6 (0)AFU 12 July 1943, 24 OTU 10 August 1943. He went to 61 Base and then to 408 Squadron on 4 January 1944. It was from there that Francis lost his life on 22 March 1944. |

Operation | Frankfurt. 816 aircraft, 33 losses (4.0%). An indirect route, in addition to a diversionary raid on Kiel kept fighters away for some time and in fact the German controller believed that Frankfurt was the target. Marking and bombing were accurate and Frankfurt was again badly damaged right across the city. 948 deaths and 346 seriously injured. Some 120000 people were bombed out of their homes. |
