Miscellaneous Information
John was born at Ottawa on 1 July 1914. Both parents were born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He had three brothers, James, Hugh and Alexander and sisters Mary and Margaret. A third sister, Agnes had sadly died in 1927. He studied at St Patrick’s Separate School 1921-1928 (High school entrance) and at Ottawa Technical High 1929-1935 (general). It was from here, that John studied drafting and machine shop, woodwork, painting and motor mechanics. His sport interests were football, basketball, baseball and swimming. John had worked underground at the Lake Shore Mines as a pneumatic drill operator from 1936 until enlistment on 14 March 1941. |
He embarked from Canada on 9 December 1941 and arrived at 3 PRC on 19 December from whence he went to 16 OTU on 21 April 1942, 29 OTU 26 June1942, and then 101 Squadron on 18 August 1942. Sadly John died just ten days later on 28 August 1942. |

Operation | Kassel- 306 aircraft sustained 31 losses (10.1%). PFF found little cloud cover and were able to mark the target without difficulty. Widespread damage throughout the city, including damage to all three of the Henchel aircraft factory. At this extraordinary loss rate, an airman stood less than 0.5% chance of surviving his two tours. |
