John was born at Havelock, Peterborough, Ontario on 13 November 1920. His father was a butcher and both parents were born in Havelock. He had a sister Dora and a brother Pte. Donald Ellister Ketchen, who served with the 48th Highlanders of Canada. Very sadly he died on 16 December 1944 from serious injuries he had sustained whilst serving. John attended Havelock Public school 1926. 1933 followed by the High school 1933-1936. The sports John took part in were softball, bowling and hockey. Between 1936-1938 he was unemployed but between 1938-1941 he was employed in Plating for Yale & Towne in St, Catherine’s, Ontario. John enlisted on 24 November 1941. |
After completing his training he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Halifax on 10 April 1944 arriving at 3 (RCAF) PRC on 19 April 1944. He then went on to 22 OTU on 21 May , 61 Base 23 August 1944, and 431 Squadron 9 October 1944. John sadly died on 22 March 1945. |

Operation | Hildesheim- to attack the railway yards. 235 aircraft, 4 losses. Although the attack was on the railway yards, this raid had all the hallmarks of area bombing. A post war survey put the level of damage at 70% of the town and this was the only raid upon it. The cathedral, most of the churches and many historic buildings were destroyed. More than 10000 apartments were also destroyed and 1645 people were killed |
