Reason for Loss | Killed by a night-fighter attack in which cannon shells burst through the front of the aircraft, killing the second pilot and mortally wounding the front gunner, Sgt David Conibear. The navigator fell out of the damaged airframe and became a PoW. The pilot P/O Rees managed to return the aircraft to base with the help of the wireless operator, the only crew member who was still uninjured. He was awarded an immediate DFC and the WOp Lewis gained a DFM. The outside of the fuselage was heavily blood stained on its return but returned to service after repair. |
