Lawrence was born on 7 March 1918 in Pembroke, Wales. His father was born in Scotland, and worked in Canada as a mining machine man, and his mother was born in Pembroke. He started Public school in Drumheller, Alberta, 1925-1932 followed by East Coulee High 1932-1936 and obtained Grade X111 and Junior Matric. The sports Lawrence was involved in were, hockey, which he played with the East Coulee Junior Hockey Club, tennis, baseball and golf. He worked as a Box Car Loader engineer for the Atlas Coal Company in East Coulee. |
Lawrence enlisted on 6 June 1940 and after training was posted to the U.K. arriving on 2 March 1941. He was at 14 OTU on 15 March 1941, 22 OTU 10 May 1941 and 405 Squadron on 7 August 1941. |
