Miscellaneous Information
Alexander was born on 20 January 1912 in Verdun, Province of Québec. Both parents were born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his father, who was deceased by the time of Alexander's enlistment, had been a Stone-maker. Alexander had one brother, William. They lived in Hallowell Avenue, Westmount. Alexander attended the following schools: Berthelet School, Montreal 1919-1926( primary completed); 1926-1930 he took evening Tech classes at Commercial High School Montreal (chemistry & mathematics); 1930-1931 Canadian School of Electricity, Montreal. He also attended Sir George Williams School, Montreal between 1938-1942 (chemistry and textiles). Between 1926-1927 he was a Gnr. In the 2nd Regt. RCAF Montreal. Between 1927-1929 he worked as an apprentice in Electrical Engineering . He then worked as an office clerk 1929-1930 at Imperial Tobacco . Alexander was unemployed between 1932-1934 and then joined Ciba Co. Ltd as a textile chemist, from 1934 onwards. |
Enlisting on 31 August 1942, Alexander later embarked from Halifax on 26 August 1943 for the U.K. where he arrived at 3 PRC on 2 September 1943. He then went to 1 (0)AFU 26 October 1943, 24 OTU 28 December 1943, 61 Base 29 March 1944 and finally 426 Squadron on 10 May 1944. |

Operation | Hamburg. 307 aircraft. German night-fighters appeared on the return leg leading to 22 losses (7.2%). This was the first raid on Hamburg for a year and was not well concentrated. The Germans were unable to determine the aiming point from the bombing results. Most of the bombs fell on areas devastated during 1943. |
