Miscellaneous Information
Laurence was born in Toronto on 1 February 1916. His father was a carpenter, born in Clinton, Ontario and his mother was born in Kitchener, Ontario. The schools he attended were: Oliver Day School (Private) 1922-1927; Fern Avenue Public 1927-1929 (full Entrance); Parkdale Collegiate 1929-1931 and Mimico High School (Matriculation); Bryn Athyn Collegiate 1933-1935. (Arts); University of Toronto, extension department, 1938-1939 (Magazine Writing). Between 1935-1936 Laurence worked as an assistant Shipper for Rapid Grip and Batten Ltd., in West Toronto, then continued as photo engraver apprentice from 1936 onwards. His main sport interests were tennis, skiing and swimming but also took part in skating basketball and softball. |
Laurence enlisted on 16 December 1940 and after training arrived in the U.K. at 3 PRC on 27 September 1941. He went to 20 OTU on 4 November 1941, 101 Sqn on 2 May 1942 and 149 Squadron on 31 August 1942. |
