Miscellaneous Information
One of four 10 Squadron Halifaxes lost on this raid |
Thomas was born on 29 October 1909 at Musselburgh, Scotland. Both parents were born in Edinburgh, Scotland and his father had worked as a plasterer. He attended Linwood School between 1915-1923 (public) and Linwood Collegiate 1923-1926 (Matric) both in Winnipeg. He also took a course in architecture at the University of Manitoba, 1928-1929. His main sport interests were hockey and golf but occasionally played football and tennis. Thomas worked at Western Steel 1926-1928 as a sheet metal worker and then took on several odd jobs between 1929-1930 including an Architects apprentice with Pratt & Ross. He did several more temporary jobs during the summer as a draftsman until 1930 when he worked for McColl Frontenac Oil Company as a Salesman and Draftsman until 1941, when he then enlisted on 13 May. |
After enlisting on 13 May 1941 Thomas was posted to the U.K. after initial training. He embarked from Canada on 30 April 1942, arriving at 3PRC on 13 May. He was then at 24 OTU on 18 June 1942, 10 CU on 28 August and 10 Squadron 25 September 1942. Sadly, a few short weeks later, Thomas lost his life on 1 October 1942. |
