Miscellaneous Information
F/O Hood was able to bale out and evaded capture, despite serious burns to his leg. He was quickly found by resistance operatives and was told to lie low, since liberation was expected to be a matter of weeks away. His rescuer was later betrayed and executed. Hood spent the remainder of 1944 in various safe houses and was treated very well by them all. On the night of 13/3/45 Hood was arrested and was taken for interrogation by the notorious Hauptsturmfurher Dr Oskar Konrad Gerbig. Afterwards he was led away in a car and, although under the impression he was being transferred to a PoW camp, was in fact shot in some nearby woods and his body hastily buried. Within two weeks the town was liberated by the Allies. Hood's body has since been exhumed and re-interred in Almelo Cemetery. |
