| Reason for Aircraft Loss | Whilst on the outbound crossing of the North Sea the pilot attempted to speak to the rear gunner on the intercom but recieved no reply. He sent the wireless operator back to the rear gun turret to investigate and he found that Sgt Hill had bailed out. His body was never found and the reasons for him leaving the aircraft never established. The aircraft went on to complete its bombing run and was fired upon by a night-fighter shortly after turning for home. Despite sharp evasive action the night-fighter made a second attack but was eventually shaken off. Rounds were seen passing very close to the Whitley but it was undamaged and made a safe return to base. |
