Miscellaneous Information
He was educated at Bennett Street P.E. School and the Municpal Technical College in Londonderry. Before enlisting he worked as a member of the clerical staff at Messrs. Bible & Simmons. An enthusiastic sportsman, he was a well known hockey player and also played footbal for the YMCA. He was a member of the former City of Derry Boating Club and in 1937 was in the crew of the Maiden Four which won at the Bann regatta. He was also active in the Boys' Brigade and was a member of the 1st Londonderry (First Derry Presbyterian Church) Company and for two years in succession won the senior gymnastic cup. He was also one of the three members of the Company holding the King's Badge, the highest honour in the Boys' Brigade. He was also a member of the Presbyterian Working Mens' Insitute and before enlisting was for several years a member of B Company, Londonderry Battalion, Ulster Special Constabulary. |
