Last Operation Information

End Date | 14-05-1943 |
Takeoff Station | Downham Market |
Day/Night Raid | Night (65% moon) |
Operation | Bochum. 442 aircraft, 24 losses (5.4%). Decoy markers drew much of the bombing away from the target. Little information available from local sources about the extent of the damage. |
Reason for Loss | Attacked at 01:43 whilst orbiting the target by an unknown enemy aircraft, killing the rear gunner, Sgt. Howard. The cannon and machine gun fire badly damaged the aircraft and put the intercom out of action. The crew immediately jettisoned their bomb load and made for Base, but due to shortage of fuel caused by ruptured fuel tanks the captain decided to divert to Chedburgh. Knowing that the flaps and undercarriage were damaged he lined up for a belly landing but in the final approach all four engines cut and and it tragically crashed on the periphery of the airfield, hitting and tree and killing all of the rest of the crew except the captain Sgt. Nichols, who was badly injured and hospitalised, and the navigator, P/O Pierce, who walked away with nothing more serious than a sprained ankle. |
