Miscellaneous Information
Hinrik was born on 19 January 1925 at Poplar Park, Manitoba. His father was a farmer, born in Iceland and his mother was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His mother Freda’s full name was Holmfridur. He had four brothers, Cliff, Jonas, Fred and Sam and five sisters Asdis, Birgitta,Helga, Bertie and Eileen. He attended Sheffield school in Manitoba between 1931-1940 (grade IX) and then went on to Daniel McIntyre, Winnipeg between 1940-1943 (grade XI). The sports he took part in were hockey, softball, soccer and swimming. |
After enlisting on 9 October 1943 and undergoing training, Hinrik was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Halifax on 11 July 1944. He reached 3PRC on 19July and then went on to 86 OTU 8 August 1944, 27 OTU 13 October 1944. 61 Base, 1 November 1944, 1666 CU 8 December 1944 and 431 Squadron 6 February 1945. Sadly, the following month on 5 March 1945, Hinrik was to lose his life. |

Operation | Chemnitz- continuation of Operation Thunderclap. 760 aircraft. Severe icing conditions over home bases cost 9 aircraft, especially from 426 Sqn. A further 22 aircraft were lost on the operation. The centre and south of the city were badly damaged by fire. Several important factories were destroyed, including the Siegmar tank engine plant. |
