De Engelse Vickers Wellington bommenwerper X9910 KO-Y is op de terugweg van een bombardement op Hamburg aangeschoten door een Duitse jachtvlieger. Het toestel is vlak bij de kerk geëxplodeerd. De torenspits van de kerk werd daarbij geraakt en is volledig afgebrand
