Miscellaneous Information
After initial training he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Halifax on 21 July 1943, arriving at 3 PRC on 30 July 1943. He then went to 10 (0) AFU on 17 August 1943, 82 OTU on 14 September 1943, 61 Base 31 December 1943, 408 Sqn 7 February 1944, 405 Sqn 31 August 1944 and 635 Squadron on 1 February 1945. Robert sadly lost his life the following month on 15 March 1945. |

Operation | Chemnitz- continuation of Operation Thunderclap. 760 aircraft. Severe icing conditions over home bases cost 9 aircraft, especially from 426 Sqn. A further 22 aircraft were lost on the operation. The centre and south of the city were badly damaged by fire. Several important factories were destroyed, including the Siegmar tank engine plant. |
Reason for Loss | Robert was born in Montreal, Québec on 9 December 1920. His father, a CPR electrician, was born in England and his mother in Tweed, Ontario. He had a brother Herbert Ernest who was a Private (possibly in the Perth Regiment). He attended Drummond School, Montreal 1928-1936 followed by Montreal High 1936-1938. Robert also took an evening course in French. His sporting interests were hunting, fishing, swimming, basketball and skiing. His hobby was Marksmanship. Robert worked as an office clerk for T. Eaton Company in Montreal between 1938 -1940. He then joined the army and was in the R.C. Engineers (Active Service) at Farnham, Quebec between 1940-1942 until enlisting in the RCAF on 2 June 1942. |
