Miscellaneous Information
William was born on 7 September 1915 at Metcalfe, Osgoode, Ontario. His father, a farmer, was born in Kenmore and his mother in Kemptville, both deceased. His next of kin on his enlistment papers was his aunt (his mother’s sister), Brigit Casserly. When his mother died a few months after his birth, he was sent to live with his aunt Brigit and uncle, William Casserly. He also had a sister Margaret and brothers Fred, Edward and Leo. His sister married a Terence McEvoy and produced fourteen children. He attended Metcalfe Public School 1922-1930 and Metcalfe Continuation High between 1930-1934. He played hockey. For a short while he worked as a labourer but then worked for himself painting and whitewashing for four years until enlisting. Whilst home on leave after completing his first tour, William met, and fell in love with a young lady named Mary and after a whirlwind romance they were married. |
At the end of his first tour he once again embarked for the U.K. and left Canada on 4 August 1944, arriving at 3 PRC on 11 August 1944. He was then at 61 Base on 2 September 1944, 1659 CU 19 September 1944 and then to 76 Base before ending at 431 Squadron on 23 November 1944. William sadly lost his life on 6 January 1945. |
