Miscellaneous Information
Charles was born on 27 August 1923 at Battleford, Saskatchewan. Both parents were born in England, his father in Hampton and his mother in Beckenham. Both are in the Greater London area. He had a brother Bernard and two sisters. The schools he attended were Battleford and Watrous Public. 1929-1938 and Watrous High 1938-1941 (Jnr.and Snr. Matric). William’s sport interests were skating, tennis, skiing, and softball and his hobby was the wireless and radio. He had also been a Cub Master in the Boy Scouts for four years. He had little work experience but had been an assistant clerk for about four months in total. His father had served in both the Boer war and WW1. |
William enlisted on 20 September 1941 (less than a month after his 18th birthday) and after his initial training embarked for the U.K. on 9 March 1943. He arrived at 3 PRC on 18 March 1943, 11 (P)AFU 4 May 1943, 23 OTU 6 July 1943, 1659 CU 25 September 1943 and 427 Squadron on 20 October 1943. Charles was on his second tour of ops when he sadly lost his life on 17 August 1944 and remarkably had flown at least 53 operational sorties despite being only 20 years of age. |
