Het is omstreeks twee uur in de nacht van 22 op 23 April 1944 als de inwoners van Herkingen worden opgeschrikt door een vliegtuig dat met gierende motoren over het dorp scheert. Met een enorme knal stort het viermotorige vliegtuig neer in de ondergelopen
Translation "It is about two o'clock in the night of 22/23 April 1944 when the people of Herkingen are alarmed by a plane that sheers over the village with howling engines. With an enormous bang the four-engine plane crashes in the inundated St. Elisabethpolder. The Handley Page Halifax bomber (LK802) belongs to the 429 (RCAF) Sqn and is on its way back from the mission to Düsseldorf, when it is attacked by a German nightfighter" |

Miscellaneous Information
born 29 September 1920 in Calgary and lived in Okotoks, Alberta. He had two brothers, Kenneth and William and a sister, Elizabeth Jane. His father was a farmer and elevator agent. Albert was born in South Dakota and mother Mary, in Maine, USA. James went to the Public School Delroy, Delacour between 1925 and 1935 and then his High Schooling at Kathryn, 1933- 1937. This was followed by the Institute of Technical and Art in Calgary, 1938-1939 where he studied Farm Construction and Mechanics. He was employed at the Independent Grain Company at Conridge, Atlanta between 1937-38 as an assistant Grain buyer and then at Oil Well Supply Company, an Oil fuel equipment manufacturer, as a Store Clerk from 1939 until he enlisted. Had also been involved in tractor farming. Between 1940-1941, James served with the 2nd Bn, Calgary Highlanders, Okotoks as a Lance Corporal. |
Enlisting on the 11 October 1941, he eventually embarked on 16 May 1943 for the UK, arriving at No 3 PRC on 24 May, then to 15 (P) AFU 29 June 1943, 22 OTU, 61 Base on 25 January 1944, 1666 CU, 12 Feb 1944, until reaching 429 Squadron on 14 March 1944. |
The sports he enjoyed were, fishing, hunting, softball, hockey, swimming and track events. |

Operation | Düsseldorf. 596 aircraft, 29 losses (4.9%). 2150 tones of bombs were dropped, causing considerable damage, mainly to the northern districts. 56 large industrial premises were hit, of which 7 were destroyed. More than 2000 homes were destroyed, 883 people killed and 593 injured, although these figures were compiled before all the missing had been dug out. |
