Donald was born at BarrIe, Ontario on 10 May 1920. His father was born at Oshawa, Ontario where he worked as a secretary of the Barrie Board of Education and his mother was born in Toronto at Morrisburg. The schools he attended were the Prince of Wales Public, Barrie. 1926-1935 (General) Academic, Barrie Collegiate Institute. 1935-1939 (Senior Matric), University of Toronto 1939 (Medicine). His sport interests were rugby, hockey, basketball, tennis and track and field. During the school holidays between June and September he took on the following work: as a councillor at Kawartha Boy’s camp, Peterborough, Owen Sound 1936; as a pantryman at Transport Action Co. Owen Sound 1938 and as a ledger keeper at First Co-operative Packers, Barrie 1939. In 1940 he was an Orderly at RCAF Officer’s Mess at Camp Borden. |
On 13 November 1940, Donald enlisted and after early training he was sent to the U.K. He arrived at 3PRC on 18 September 1941, 20 OTU 21 October 1941, 101 Sqn on 2 May 1942 and on to 115 Squadron on 5 May 1942. Sadly Donald was to lose his life on 26 July 1942. |
