Thomas was born in Whitehaven, Cumbria in 1911 on 15 March 1911 and as a child his family emigrated to the USA for seven years but returned to Whitehaven when he was 14. He began work as a builder and built up a very reputable business in the Whitehaven area as well as belonging to two lodges of the Masons. In 1931 he married Mabel and had two daughters, Dorothy and Jean. In August 1941 he enlisted into the RAFVR and trained as a pilot in the USA before returning to England and joining 101 Squadron. He was 32 at the time of the accident leaving his wife and children aged 1 and 8. |
