Miscellaneous Information
John was born in Vancouver on 12 August 1918. His father was born in Walsden, West Yorkshire, England and worked as a Yard Foreman for Canadian Pacific Railway and his mother was born in Castlederg, County Tyrone, Ireland. He had one brother, Brian Hamilton Edwards. He attended General Gordon Public School 1924-1929 (General course), followed by Kitsilano High School 1929-1935 (Matric Course). He then went to Seaview High, School of Commerce 1935-1936 (Stenography and bookkeeping)- all in Vancouver. Some of his sporting interests were swimming, hiking, table tennis and canoeing. Between 1936-1941 John worked as an Export Shipping Clerk for Pacific Mills Ltd. He was a Private in the 2nd Btn. Irish Fusiliers, October-November 1940. |
After enlisting on 19 August 1941 and going through initial training, John was sent to the U.K. where he arrived at 3 PRC on 2 September 1942. He then went on to 6(P) AFU on 11 September 1942, 22 OTU 17 November 1942, 1659 CU 10 March 1943 and 405 Squadron on 29 March 1943. It was from here, the following week, that John sadly lost his life. 7 April, 1943. |
