Nicholas was born at McCleary, Manitoba on 12 December 1917. Both parents were born in the Ukraine and his father was a city Waterworks employee. He had sisters Mary, Hilda and Verna and brothers Joseph, Mike and one more. The schools he attended were North Ward and Central, Public schools at Portage La Prairie 1923-1929, Portage La Prairie Collegiate Institute, High School 1929-1933. Between 1936-1938 he attended the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute in Chicago. Nicholas worked between 1929-36 as a Salesman at A. Wilson & Son in Portage during the summer months then from 1938 onwards at G.Bonnett, Toronto, as a clerk and designer. Nicholas enjoyed playing hockey and rugby and all outdoor sports as well as hunting and duck shooting . He also did a lot of flying when in Chicago. |
He enlisted on 1 July 1940 and after training was posted to the U.K. He arrived at 3PRC on 2 May 1941, then went to 12 OTU on 4 May 1941 and on to 7 Squadron on 8 July 1941. It was from there that Nicholas sadly lost his life on 18 December 1941. |
