Miscellaneous Information
Robert was born at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, on 17 February 1921. His father was a mechanic, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and his mother, who was deceased by the time of Robert's enlistment, was born in Newfoundland. He had a sister Audrey and six brothers, Vernon, Jack, Reginald, Carl, Bruce and Donald. He attended Park School, Dartmouth 1926-1936. He was then unemployed between 1936-1937 and then worked for People’s Hardware, Nova Scotia, between 1937 and 1938, before going to sea (Merchant Navy) between 1938 and 1942, when he served on various ships as an oiler and fireman. He enjoyed playing a little baseball and hockey. |
Robert then enlisted on 15 January 1943. After training he was posted to the U.K. embarking from Halifax on 3 August 1944. He arrived at 3(RCAF) PRC on 11 August, 1944, then at 82 OTU on 12 September 1944, 76 Base 15 December 1944, and 408 Squadron on 25 March 1945.
