Operation | Bergen, Norway- to attack U-boat pens. This target was chosen because the U-boats had been forced out of France and Bergen was used to house the U-boats instead. 140 aircraft- most to bomb the pens but some detailed to bomb individual U-boats which were known to be moored in open waters. 12 Mosquitoes acted as long range fighter escort. Little damage was caused to the pens due to the thickness of the concrete, even though 7 bombs hit. The electrics were put of action however. 3 U-boats were damaged but did not sink and some small ships were damaged, two of which sank. Tragically, a school was also hit and 60 children, 2 teachers and 17 air-raid workers were killed. An air raid shelter at a nearby factory was also hit with the loss of 34 lives. 1 aircraft lost. |
Reason for Loss | Found by a shepherd on high ground at Goldscleugh near Rothbury, Scotland |
