Miscellaneous Information
Scott and Robinson were shot dead, allegedly while trying to escape, by their escort, policeman Fritz Wenzel and Volkssturm man Bernhard Kalkofe. (Wenzel was never found; Kalkofe was tried by a British Military Court and acquitted; trial record is WO 235/497 at the British National Archives). Draper and Appleyard were shot dead by Landrat and Kreisleiter (nazi party official on county level) Franz Hofmann at Schlossvippach and Vippachedelhausen, respectively. (Franz Hofmann was shot dead by a German sentry at a roadblock in Weimar before the end of the war). Contrary to many reports, Sheppard and Woodburn were killed in the crash and their initial burial was in a field called "Wallendorf-Hinterfeld" in the Großneuhausen cadastral district. Their files are as follows: WO 235/497 (trial), WO 235/775 (DJAG file), WO 309/148, WO 309/708, WO 309/1072, WO 311/281 (investigation files). A testimony from an eyewittness, at the time a boy of 12 years, states that on 8 March 1945 he saw the wreckage of a bomber airplane in the field, and close by two dead bodies lying in the furrows and thinly covered with soil. Both were re-interred in the British Military Cemetery in Berlin in 1950. W/O Howe, on the other hand, was found by Kurt Stiebritz and cared for until 13th March when an SS medical officer gave him an injection and sent him to hospital, having diagnosed pneumonia. Sadly, he died two days later. It is not certain whether the medical officer's intervention was a bona fide attempt to offer legitimate treatment of whether it brought about Howe's demise. |
